Meritage is an American term with a precise meaning: a red blend built from the classic Bordeaux grapes — Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, sometimes Malbec and Petit Verdot — made somewhere other than Bordeaux. This 2013 is that idea in practice, and the years already spent in bottle have done much of the waiting on your behalf.
Blends of this type typically show cassis and plum layered with cedar, tobacco and dried herb, tannins settled by time into something rounder than youthful Cabernet. Decant it, watch for sediment, and give it food: ribeye, short ribs, mushroom risotto, aged cheese. A bottle for a considered dinner.
