Marietta Cellars built its reputation on unfussy, deeply flavored North Coast reds, and Christo is the house at its most structured. A blend led by Syrah and Petite Sirah, the 2019 was made to drink well now and reward a few more years in the rack. It has weight without swagger, the kind of bottle that quietly outclasses others at the price.
Expect dark plum, blackberry and cracked pepper, with a savory edge of dried herb and a finish that turns toward cocoa and graphite. The tannins are firm enough to stand up to grilled lamb, short ribs or anything off a charcoal grill. Give it thirty minutes in a decanter and it opens beautifully.
