Matanzas Creek has been one of the most consistent, working with cooler sites that give the grape freshness and definition instead of the soft, sweet weight that damaged its reputation in the first place.
The 2018 offers black plum, cocoa and a note of dried violet, with fine-grained tannins and a savory, herbal lift on the finish. It is more elegant than powerful. Pair it with roast duck, pork tenderloin, mushroom dishes or a cheese board, and serve it a touch below room temperature.
