Old vines are worth seeking out. As a vineyard ages its yields fall and its roots go deeper, and the fruit that results tends to be more concentrated and more savory than anything a young planting can produce. Wines labeled this way are often the best value on a shelf, because the vineyard does work the winemaker would otherwise have to buy.
Expect a dark, dry red with black fruit, dried herb and a firm earthy backbone rather than sweetness or heavy oak. Serve it at cool room temperature with grilled meat, stews, hard cheese or a plate of cured sausage. A short decant helps it open.
