Italy grows a surprising amount of Pinot Noir, most of it in the cool northern provinces where the grape actually stands a chance. Trentino is one of those places, and the style that emerges is lighter and more transparent than the California version: less oak, less weight, more freshness. It is Pinot Noir as an everyday wine rather than a special occasion.
Look for red cherry, wild strawberry and a faint earthy note, with bright acidity and tannins that barely register. Serve it lightly chilled. It is one of the most flexible reds at the table, handling salmon, turkey, pork, mushrooms and soft cheeses with equal ease.
