Growers who also make wine tend to make honest wine, and the Milbrandts were vineyard farmers in Washington long before they put their name on a label. Their straight Cabernet Sauvignon reflects that: fruit picked at real ripeness, oak kept in a supporting role, and no attempt to imitate a more expensive region.
Deep and dark in the glass, it runs to cassis, black cherry and dark chocolate with a savory edge of cedar and dried herb. The tannins are firm and dry, made for protein. Open it half an hour ahead and pour it with steak, lamb, or anything that came off a charcoal grill.
