Super Tuscan began as an act of rebellion, Tuscan winemakers blending international grapes into Sangiovese and forfeiting their official classification to do it. The category is thoroughly respectable now, and bottles like this one deliver its appeal at everyday money rather than collector money. A good introduction to the style.
Sangiovese supplies the bright cherry and the savory dried herb edge, while the blending grapes fill in the mid palate with darker fruit and a plusher texture. The tannins are present but polished. Decant briefly, serve at cool room temperature, and pour it alongside steak, ragu, grilled vegetables or a wedge of pecorino.
