Murphy-Goode has been a familiar California name since the early 1980s, and its reputation rests on making varietal wine that tastes the way people hope it will. The Cabernet is the clearest example: ripe, generous, unmistakably Californian, and priced so it can be a Tuesday wine rather than an occasion wine.
Dark berry and black plum up front, with vanilla, mocha and sweet oak spice behind, wrapped in soft tannins and a warm finish. Serve at cool room temperature; a short decant helps it along. Natural with burgers, barbecue, roast lamb, or anything that has spent time over charcoal.
