OZV stands for old Zin vines, and that is the whole proposition: fruit from mature Zinfandel plantings in Lodi, a region that has grown the grape for well over a century and still produces some of the best value in California red wine. Oak Ridge Winery has worked these vineyards for generations, and the price here stays remarkably kind.
Bold and juicy, with blackberry jam, black pepper, mocha and a sweet-spiced vanilla note from the oak, closing soft and generous. It is a natural with barbecue, burgers, sausage, or anything with a smoky char. Serve it slightly cool, around cellar temperature, so the fruit stays lively rather than turning heavy.
