Old Grand-Dad has always been the high-rye outlier in its family, built on a mash bill with noticeably more rye than most Kentucky bourbon. Sixteen years is a long time for any bourbon and a very long time for one this spicy, since the extra rye gives the oak something to push against rather than simply overwhelm.
Baking spice and cinnamon lead, then dark caramel, dried orange peel, tobacco leaf and a long dry-oak finish. This is bourbon for slow drinking: neat, a splash of water at most, nothing else in the glass. Save it for the pours that come with a story attached and an audience worth telling it to.
