Zinfandel is the grape California can most fairly claim as its own, and Mendocino supplies enough cool night air to keep the ripeness in check. Paul Dolan farms organically and makes this one with a light touch, leaving a Zin that is generous without tipping into jammy or overblown.
Brambly blackberry and raspberry with black pepper, a little sweet spice and soft round tannins. Serve it slightly cool with ribs, pulled pork, sausages or anything that has been near a smoker. A crowd-pleasing red for a backyard, and sturdy enough for a cold-weather braise.
