Pitars works in northeastern Italy, in the flat vineyard country of Friuli where Alpine air meets Adriatic influence. Cabernet has a long history there, planted well before it became fashionable elsewhere, and the local style runs cooler and more savory than the New World version. This is an honest, well-made bottle for drinkers who like their reds firm rather than sweet.
Blackcurrant and dark cherry lead, with a green herbal edge, tobacco leaf and a dry, moderately tannic finish. Give it thirty minutes open, serve near 62 degrees, and pour it with grilled red meat, hard cheese or mushroom pasta.
