Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo farms steep schist terraces above the Douro, and vintage Port is where an estate like that shows its hand: one declared year, bottled young, left to mature in the bottle. The 2000 has spent a quarter of a century doing exactly that. Genuinely mature wine at a sane price is rare, and this is one of the last corners where it survives.
Age has pulled it toward raisin, dried cherry and orange peel, backed by coffee, cedar and a long warm finish. Let the bottle stand a day, decant off the sediment, and serve near 62 degrees with nuts and blue cheese.
