Plum, blackberry and a soft edge of cocoa: Merlot at its best is the friendliest of the major red grapes, and Robert Mondavi has been making an approachable California version for decades. Nothing here is angular or demanding. It is a red for the people at the table who would rather not work at it.
Medium-bodied and rounded, with ripe dark fruit, a little vanilla from oak, and tannins that stay soft throughout. Serve it lightly cool. It goes with roast chicken, pork tenderloin, meatballs, mushroom risotto and most cheeses, and it is a forgiving bottle to open before guests arrive.
