Louis XIII is measured in lifetimes. Every decanter blends hundreds of eaux-de-vie drawn entirely from Grande Champagne, some aged as long as a century in tierconnes, the old oak casks handed down through generations of cellar masters. Whoever laid down the oldest component never tasted the finished blend, and today's cellar master is doing the same for someone not yet born.
The aromatics are extraordinary: dried flowers, honey, fig, saffron, sandalwood, candied citrus and passion fruit, unfolding for as long as the glass sits. On the palate it is weightless and seemingly endless. Serve it neat at room temperature in a fine glass, in small measures, for the rarest occasions.
