Ron Medellin comes out of Antioquia, the mountainous cane-and-coffee country in the northwest, where distilling has been a point of regional pride for well over a century. Gran Reserva is the house's patient expression, a blend built for sipping rather than mixing, and it arrives at a price that makes the discovery easy to justify.

Expect a soft, rounded profile: toffee and dried banana, a little vanilla drawn from the wood, and a finish that stays sweet without turning syrupy. Serve it neat in a small glass, or over one large cube with an orange twist. A good pick for rum drinkers who have worked through the Caribbean and want to hear what the Andes have to say.
