In the hills of northern Italy, indigenous red grapes have long been turned into wine that is sweet, lightly sparkling and drunk young, a local habit that never much concerned the fine-wine world. Roscato brought that tradition to America and found an enormous audience waiting for it. Rosso Dolce is the original bottling and still the reason the brand exists.
The wine is deep ruby, softly effervescent and full of black cherry, blackberry and ripe plum, with a sweetness that stays juicy rather than syrupy thanks to a lively thread of acidity. Serve it well chilled. A natural with chocolate, with spicy barbecue, and with anyone who has decided dry red wine is not for them.
