Jeff Runquist has spent his career chasing individual vineyard blocks across California rather than building a single estate, and Petite Sirah is one of the varieties he handles best. It is a naturally dark, thick-skinned grape that can turn clumsy in the wrong hands; here it stays generous and well-fruited, with the oak kept in a supporting role.
The colour alone tells you what is coming: blueberry, blackberry and dark plum, with cracked pepper, dark chocolate and a chewy, mouth-coating grip. Open it for barbecue, lamb, or anything that has spent hours over smoke. Big wine, drunk best in company and in moderation.
