Five years in oak is almost unheard of in mezcal. The category prizes youth and clarity, so a producer willing to leave spirit in barrel for half a decade is making an argument rather than a product. Scorpion's five-year anejo is that argument won: the smoke has folded into the wood entirely.
Deep and contemplative, with roasted agave buried under toffee, dried fig, leather, cocoa and a curl of woodsmoke that arrives last. The texture is oily and the finish enormous. Serve it neat, in small pours, after a long dinner, for drinkers who want something they cannot immediately place.
