Bodegas AGE has wrapped this Rioja in its signature burlap sack since the 1960s, and the costume has outlasted plenty of fashions. Inside is a classic crianza: Tempranillo from northern Spain, rested in oak and then in bottle before release, priced without pretense.
Dried cherry and plum sit against vanilla, leather and sweet tobacco from barrel time, with tannins that have already done most of their softening. Pour it with lamb, chorizo, aged Manchego, or a weeknight roast chicken. A dependable house red for anyone who likes Rioja on its savory side.
