The name nods to the spice routes Portuguese ships once ran, and the grapes come from Portugal rather than anywhere more fashionable. This is a modern red blend built on native varieties by one of the country's largest and most experienced wine houses, and it drinks well above its shelf price.
The style is plush and warm: blackberry and dark plum, a lick of mocha, and the cinnamon-clove lift the label is named for. Tannins are rounded, the finish faintly sweet.
