Named for Davis Hogue, the great-grandfather who distilled in Alabama, this is Beyonce's entry into whisky, and it was built with Moet Hennessy rather than assembled as a vanity label. A rye-forward American whisky finished in sherry casks, it wears a famous name lightly.
Sherry influence shows as dried fig, dark honey and baked apple, with rye pepper and a warm oak spine underneath. At 44 percent it takes a cube or a few drops of water without falling apart, and it builds an unusually plush Manhattan. A strong gift bottle for a curious drinker.
