Steelbird is the unoaked chardonnay in the Smoking Loon range, fermented in stainless steel rather than barrel, which is exactly what the name is pointing at. The result is chardonnay stripped of the butter and vanilla that turned so many drinkers off the grape to begin with.
Crisp and clean, with green apple, lemon and a faint mineral streak running through to a dry finish. Serve it cold with shellfish, grilled vegetables, sushi or a simple green salad. A smart house white for anyone who likes chardonnay in theory but not in its oaky form.
