Few California houses have staked their reputation on a single grape as completely as Sonoma-Cutrer. Since the early 1970s the winery has farmed cool Sonoma County vineyards with Chardonnay in mind, and the discipline shows in the glass: whole-cluster pressing, barrel fermentation and long lees contact are house habit rather than marketing.
Ripe pear and lemon curd lead, with toasted hazelnut from oak and a creamy mid-palate that finishes clean rather than heavy. Serve lightly chilled alongside roast chicken, crab cakes or pasta in cream sauce. One for anyone who wants Chardonnay with polish and restraint in equal measure.
