Sutter Home did not simply adopt White Zinfandel, it effectively created the category in the early 1970s, when a stalled fermentation in Napa produced a pale pink wine that went on to reshape what America drank. That accident became a permanent fixture, and this is the wine at the center of it.
The style is soft, gently sweet, and unmistakably pink: strawberry, watermelon, and a touch of citrus, light in alcohol and easy on acid. Serve it thoroughly chilled, on its own or against spicy food, barbecue, or anything off a grill. It asks nothing of the drinker, which is precisely its appeal.
