Pastoral is the red in the Sweet Lily range, and it follows the same philosophy as the fruit bottlings: sweetness first, structure a distant second. Duplin Winery in North Carolina makes it, and the house has spent decades serving drinkers who find dry wine unwelcoming.
Expect dark grape and berry jam, a thick sweet middle, and a warm finish with almost no tannin. Serve it chilled rather than at room temperature, in a small glass. It is a natural with chocolate desserts, with a sharp cheese, or on its own at the end of an evening. Rich, sweet, meant for small pours.
