Tanqueray has followed the same recipe since Charles Tanqueray set it down in London in 1830: four botanicals, no more, distilled with a precision that has made this bottle the default in professional bars for the better part of a century. If a gin cocktail is going to work, it will work with this.
Juniper dominates, with coriander, angelica, and licorice root giving structure and a faint sweetness, all carried by a notably high bottling strength that holds its shape under ice and citrus. It is the correct gin for a martini, a negroni, a gimlet, or a gin and tonic. Serve it very cold and be generous with the lime.
