Taylor Fladgate has been shipping port from the Douro since 1692, and First Estate is the house entry point: a reserve ruby drawn from the firm own vineyard holdings and matured in large oak vats to keep the fruit forward and the tannins polished. For anyone who has only met supermarket port, this is the bottle that explains the Douro reputation.
Blackberry, cassis and dark plum lead, with a savory undertone and a firm, dry-edged finish that keeps the sweetness honest. Serve in a small glass at cellar temperature after dinner. Classic alongside Stilton, and very good with a square of bitter chocolate.
