Aglianico is an old grape, cultivated in southern Italy since antiquity and still largely unknown outside it. Growers there treat it with the seriousness usually reserved for Nebbiolo, and for good reason: it makes structured, long-lived reds with real backbone. For anyone tired of soft, sweet-edged wines, this is a bracing change of direction.
Firm and savory, with sour cherry, dried plum, ash, tobacco and a mineral streak, all held together by high acidity and grippy tannin. It wants food and it wants air, so decant it. Serve with lamb, braised pork, aged cheese or a rich ragu.
