Unshackled comes from The Prisoner Wine Company, and the cabernet is the most conventional bottle in a deliberately unconventional range, which is to say it is still made with a heavy hand on ripeness and texture. California fruit, bold intentions, and a price that does not require a special occasion.
The glass fills with blackberry, cassis and mocha, backed by toasty oak, vanilla and a plush, rounded tannin structure. It is generous rather than subtle. Pour it with a grilled steak, barbecued ribs, a burger with blue cheese, or a wedge of aged gouda. A safe crowd-pleaser for people who like their cabernet big.
