Special Reserve 12 Year, known to collectors as Lot B, is the middle child of the Van Winkle range, drawn from a wheated mash bill at Buffalo Trace and released in quantities that never come close to meeting demand. Finding one on a shelf is the hard part.
Twelve years in oak give it depth without heaviness: caramel, dried cherry, toasted pecan and soft baking spice, with wheat lending a rounded, almost creamy texture across a long finish. Drink it neat first, then add a single drop of water. Save it for people who understand what they are holding.
