Scout's Honor is the wine that made Venge Vineyards a name well beyond Napa, a proprietary red built largely on old-vine Zinfandel and rounded out with a few supporting varieties. Nils Venge and his son Kirk have been making California reds for decades, and this is their most generous, least buttoned-up bottling.
It is rich and layered without turning heavy: blackberry jam, plum, mocha, black pepper and a lick of sweet oak, with tannins that stay soft throughout. Serve it a touch below room temperature in a big glass. Perfect with barbecued ribs, lamb sausage, burgers, or a board of aged cheeses. A cult bottle that overdelivers.
