Viognier came out of the northern Rhône and found a second home in California's warmer pockets, where it can ripen fully without losing its perfume. Vina Robles grows it in Paso Robles and bottles a version that leans aromatic rather than heavy, a genuinely interesting white for anyone tired of the usual two or three choices.
Apricot, honeysuckle and white peach fill the nose, then the palate turns drier than the aroma suggests, with a soft stone-fruit weight and a clean close. Serve it lightly chilled. It shines alongside Thai curry, roast chicken with herbs, pork loin or a ripe soft cheese.
