Few whiskeys have a stranger origin story. Buffalo Trace asked the public to specify their ideal bourbon, from mash bill to proof to where in the rickhouse it should age, then actually made it. The answer was wheated, bottled at 95 proof, and it now sits among the more elusive releases in the W.L. Weller line.
Wheat replaces rye in the grain bill, which trades pepper for pastry: caramel, vanilla, honeyed corn and a touch of orange, with cinnamon and gentle oak on a medium finish. Pour it neat and take your time. It rewards a quiet glass more than it rewards mixing.
