Wheat instead of rye is the whole idea. Buffalo Trace swaps the usual spicy secondary grain for soft red winter wheat, and the result is a bourbon that leads with sweetness and texture rather than pepper. Special Reserve is the most accessible expression of that recipe, bottled at 90 proof and built for regular drinking.
Look for vanilla, butterscotch and light honey, with orchard fruit and a whisper of oak on a smooth, short-to-medium finish. Its easy strength makes it flexible: fine neat, excellent on a single large cube, and one of the better mixing bourbons available for a whiskey sour or a highball with ginger.
