Suntory turned one hundred in 2023, and Yamazaki, Japan's first malt whisky distillery, founded in 1923 in a valley outside Kyoto chosen for its water and its mist, marked the centenary with commemorative bottlings of its core range. The 18 Year is the most coveted of them: the same benchmark whisky in packaging made for the occasion.
Eighteen years of Japanese maturation, including time in Spanish sherry casks and native mizunara oak, gives it remarkable depth: dried fruit, dark chocolate, sandalwood, honey and a whisper of incense on a very long, contemplative finish. Drink it neat, at room temperature, in silence if you can manage it.
