Twelve years is the age at which Yamazaki became famous outside Japan, and it remains the benchmark by which the whole category gets measured. Matured in a mix of cask types at the distillery in the hills between Kyoto and Osaka, this is the bottle that put Japanese single malt into the same conversation as Scotch.
Elegant and precise, with peach, pineapple and candied orange over honey and a light thread of clove, finishing clean and softly spiced. Serve it neat, or Japanese-style as a highball with plenty of ice and good soda water, which is how most of it is drunk at home. A significant gift.
