Z. Alexander Brown is the California wine project of musician Zac Brown, and the Uncaged range reflects a performer's instinct for wines with presence rather than polish for its own sake. The Chardonnay is the most generous bottle in the lineup, made in the richer California idiom and priced to be opened on an ordinary evening rather than saved for a milestone.

The style is round and full, with baked apple, lemon curd and ripe pear framed by toasted oak, vanilla and a creamy mid-palate that carries into a long finish. Serve it chilled but not ice cold, so the texture shows. It is very good with roast chicken, crab, butter sauces, corn and mushroom risotto. For drinkers who want their Chardonnay with weight.
