Dark, ripe and unapologetically Californian, this is Cabernet Sauvignon made to be enjoyed rather than analysed. The Z. Alexander Brown Uncaged label has built a following on exactly that: bold fruit, a generous hand with oak, and a consistency that makes it an easy bottle to recommend. It reads more expensive than it is, which is the whole trick.
Blackberry, black cherry and cassis arrive first, followed by mocha, baking spice and a soft vanilla edge from barrel time, with tannins that stay smooth right through a long finish. Give it twenty minutes in the glass. It belongs beside ribeye, short ribs, lamb, barbecue or a well-aged cheese, and it flatters a cold evening.
